We can, and the following photos will take you back in time to those days.
Newmans, as seen from Station Road, opposite
Pisces Fish Bar:
The above photo was taken in the last days
before the (by then) derelict factory was finally demolished. In the left
foreground is the entrance to the new B&Q Superstore. The factory building
in view is the old forge, and is now a residential development.
Newmans' perimeter wall, seen from the Glen
looking towards the banana roundabout:
Oddly, the Newmans perimeter wall was one of
the final parts of the demolition project. The camera in this shot was
taken at the side of the entrance to The Glen. The signpost directs people
straight ahead towards Westerleigh, left towards Chipping Sodbury, and
right towards Bristol on the A432. The large white house behind the sign
was once Yate Doctors Surgery, and is now a Solicitor's offices. The three
factory eaves and the other main detail behind the wall have been replaced
by Safeway Hypermarket.
Newmans factory forge, as seen from the car
park entrance of B&Q Superstore:
In this shot, the final link in Yate's history
with Newmans - the forge - awaits demolition. This shot was taken from
the entrance to B&Q car park. Where the metal gates (centre left) stand
is the roundabout for access to Pool Court/Safeway these days. The portable
generator (yellow vehicle on the right of the photo) is stood in the future
site of B&Q's car park.
